Volunteer at the GEN Summit

Go behind the scenes

We are looking for university students as well as recent graduates who are genuinely interested in media innovation, tech, and journalism to volunteer at the GEN Summit 2019 in Athens. As a volunteer, you get to work behind the scenes, meet some of today’s brightest minds in media and tech, connect with people from all over the world, and work with an energetic, international, and diverse team.

If this sounds like a perfect fit for you, read on.

What we’re looking for in a volunteer

At the GEN Summit, we are looking for volunteers who possess a wide array of different skills and abilities. We love volunteers who are friendly, open, and most importantly, motivated to make the GEN Summit 2019 in Athens the best GEN Summit so far. As it is an international conference, you must have an excellent command of English.

Training and support from the Summit volunteer coordinator will be provided prior to the start of the event. All volunteers will be thoroughly briefed on their roles and responsibilities. You will work closely with other volunteers and the team leader will always be there for any questions you might have. We want you to have a volunteering experience that is positive, educational, and fun.

  • Meals provided throughout the duration of the GEN Summit
  • Volunteers receive free access to GEN Summit sessions when not on duty
  • Access to the evening networking events, cocktail parties, and happy hours
  • A signed certificate of participation will be provided to each volunteer at the end of the GEN Summit

The GEN Summit will not provide a stipend, and will (unfortunately) not cover travel costs or accommodation for volunteers.

Roles & Responsibilities

The volunteers will be split into two teams: the ‘Media Coverage’ team and the ‘Hosting Team.’

Media Coverage Team:

  • Assist in multimedia coverage of the Summit: articles, photos, and videos
  • Contribute to the social media feed on the Summit’s official channels
  • Conduct interviews with key individuals

Hosting Team:

  • Greet and assist attendees and act as a guide during the GEN Summit
  • Help coordinate programme activities
  • Assist in the registration process

Media Coverage Team:

  • Excellent command of written English (familiarity with editorial writing is a plus)
  • Simple photo and video editing skills
  • Asset research (photos, gifs, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Medium, WordPress, and MailChimp is a strong asset
  • Preferably a media and journalism student or recent graduate

Hosting Team:

  • Excellent command of English. Other languages are a plus
  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Comfortable speaking with large groups of people

Generally, we prefer anyone who’s interested in the intersection between journalism and technology.

Time Commitment

If selected, you will have to attend two training and orientation workshops with the Summit producer and GEN Summit staff (dates TBC). In this week, we will also invite everyone for a ‘volunteer happy hour’ to get to know each other.

Volunteers are expected to attend a general meeting with the entire GEN Summit team.

Volunteers will start work from 8 am until 6 pm every day on 13-15 June. When not on duty, volunteers are free to attend sessions. Volunteers are more than welcome to attend the evening networking events and cocktails.

Timeline & application process

The deadline to apply is set to 1 May 2019. If you want to be considered, please fill out the volunteer application below and we will get back to you shortly if there are any slots available.
