On 9 May 2019, the Global Editors Network (GEN) held a press conference at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), where it presented the upcoming GEN Summit to Greek media. Some 45 participants attended the press conference, including journalists from leading outlets, such as Alpha TV, Esquire, Fortune, Kathimerini, Kanali Ena 90.4, Protagon, SKAI TV, Ta Nea, and VICE Greece among others. The discussion was moderated by Christos Memis, the GEN advisor and editor-in-chief of Protagon.
Bertrand Pecquerie, the GEN CEO, explained the relevance of the “VVV Challenge: Voice, Visual Journalism and Verification” to today’s volatile media landscape, and highlighted several speakers, including Katharine Viner, The Guardian, John Micklethwait, Bloomberg and Krishna Bharat, founder of Google News. Together, the 80 speakers of the conference will help the audience to reshape today’s journalism and set up a sustainable business model for news.
GEN’s Greek partners – Stavros Niarchos Foundation, SNFCC, iMeDd, University of Athens, the Union of Journalists, the Athens Convention Bureau and AEGEAN – were also present at the press conference and spoke about the significance of the GEN Summit in Greece.
“All of us at SNF are very excited to support the GEN Summit, even more so given that this year it will take place in Athens at the SNFCC. SNF’s support of the GEN Summit ties in with the Foundation’s overall philosophy and approach in supporting stellar independent and ethical journalistic practices through collaborations with a wide range of partners both in Greece and abroad,”- explained Panos Papoulias, the SNF COO.
GEN has planned for several sessions exclusively for the GEN Summit in Athens, involving cutting-edge technology for newsrooms and the latest research on digital news. Participants will get a first-hand experience of smart speakers, blockchain, AR/VR headsets and speech-to-text technology to name a few. New storytelling methods and automation of the news process will be also discussed by 700+ participants from 80 countries.

Editors and publishers gather to learn, share, and expand their global network. In 2017, it became the most attended editorial conference by senior media executives.
