GEN Summit 2019 will be held in Athens

PARIS – The Global Editors Network (GEN) is proud to announce that its flagship event, the GEN Summit, will take place in Athens, Greece, from 13-15 June 2019.

In recognition of the GEN Summit’s contribution to worldwide editorial development, GEN was invited by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) to host this event in the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

In a special eco-building designed by Renzo Piano, 800+ GEN Summit participants will get to experience a newly built venue overlooking the sea and the surrounding islands on one side, and the Acropolis on the other. This building, constructed with an $860 million grant from SNF and donated to the people of Greece in 2017, also serves as the new home of the Greek National Opera and the National Library of Greece.

Support by a foundation ensures that this sustainable event will keep thriving, as the GEN Summit has in previous years. This will allow a focus on what is important for The Global Editors Network: To provide the largest forum for editors-in-chief and professionals in forefront of journalism, media and technology to come together.

This year, GEN will welcome 800+ media industry leaders to join in and face a ‘VVV Challenge: Voice, Visual Journalism and Verification‘ in Athens, 13-15 June 2019 – bringing participants from all around the world together in the birthplace of democracy.

“The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) believes in the importance of a robust, independent press. Building on substantial partnerships around journalism with Columbia University, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Bloomberg, and others, we support GEN’s mission of promoting the pursuit of excellence in journalism,” said Andreas Dracopoulos, SNF Co-President. “It is the pursuit of such excellence that also motivates our collaboration with the new Athens-based Incubator for Media Education & Development (iMEdD) and the funding of this critical new initiative.”

“We at the Global Editors Network are proud to be invited to host the GEN Summit in Athens, and to receive the support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF),” said Jim Roberts, President of GEN. “We are encouraged by the SNF initiative to acknowledge excellence in journalism, and we are convinced that with the support given to us we will be able to produce the best annual conference to date.”

The Global Editors Network (GEN) was founded in 2011 to help thousands of editors, journalists and media executives from around the world, develop their skills, expand their knowledge, and meet their peers.

The GEN Summit, held annually over three days, brings together the world’s top media executives making it the most sought after industry event. Editors and publishers gather to learn, share, and expand their global network. In 2017, it became the most attended editorial conference by senior media executives.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation is one of the world’s leading private, international philanthropic organisations, making grants to nonprofit organisations in the areas of arts and culture, education, health and sports, and social welfare. Since 1996, the Foundation has committed more than $2.6 billion, through more than 4,300 grants to nonprofit organizations in 124 nations around the world.
